- take it upon yourself to do something : to accept responsibility for something without being asked to:
EX)

  • Instead of waiting for your boss to ask you to go over those details with the new employee, take it upon yourself to teach him.
  • He took it upon himself to personally thank each person at the meeting.

- wind up

  1. to bring something to an end :
    His wind-up speech was unforgettable.
We managed to wind up our presentation even though the mic was off in the middle of the presentation.

  2. to get annoyed, irritated by something or someone :
My upstairs baby neighbor cries all night and it winds up so much.
  3. to make something such as the window of a car move upward by turning a handle, pressing a button etc
A wind-up toy was good for simple fun in the old days but it's not popular for the younger generation anymore.

  4. to end up/finish somewhere
I wound up paying for all the meals for them.

- rise above the rank :
to begin a career (with a company or institution) with little power or authority and gradually gain more power and authority
EX) When you consistently incorporate these things into your daily life at work, you’ll quickly rise above the ranks. But more than being known as the employee who’s just trying to elbow his or her way to a promotion, you’ll be seen as the employee who genuinely wants to see the department and team succeed.

- elbow one's way to the top :
To find or pursue success by means of aggressive, relentless determination, often at the expense of others.
